🐾 Our Story

Built for Huckleberry.
And every dog after him.

WhatItCosts.pet started with one question: what does it actually cost to own a dog? No sugar-coating. No hidden agendas. Just honest numbers — from an actual dog owner.

Huckleberry — the dog WhatItCosts.pet was built for
The man himself 🐾

The dog who started it all.

When we first brought Huckleberry home, we did what every new dog owner does: we Googled "how much does a dog cost per month." The results were a mess — generic articles with suspiciously low numbers that had nothing to do with our actual life with Huck.

Huck's first year was full of surprises — some wonderful, some expensive. There was the vet visit we didn't budget for at month three. The harness he destroyed in two days (we bought a second one, sturdier this time — Huck-tested and approved). The insurance policy we wish we'd signed up for on day one instead of month four, right before he needed it.

We built WhatItCosts.pet so the next person with their Huckleberry can walk in prepared. Every number on this site has been run through the real-world filter of actually owning Huck.

Frustrated by bad data. Motivated by a real dog.

Most "how much does a dog cost?" articles are designed to make pet ownership sound as affordable as possible. They round down. They leave out the hard years. They skip the emergency fund conversation entirely. The real numbers can be scary — and scary numbers don't inspire the warm fuzzy feeling those articles are going for.

So we used Huck as our starting point. What did he actually cost us, month by month, year over year, unexpected bill by unexpected bill? Then we matched that lived experience against the research: ASPCA surveys, veterinary fee benchmarks, breed health studies. The numbers aligned — and they were higher than most guides admitted.

Every estimate on this site comes from independent veterinary research, insurance actuarial data, and breed health surveys. No financial stake in what number you see. Just the real picture — the same one we wish we'd had when we brought Huck home.

When we say it works, we mean Huck tested it.

We don't recommend anything we haven't personally run through the Huck filter. Here's what that actually looks like in practice:

🦺
Gear
The harness that survived Huck
Huck destroyed his first harness in 48 hours. The replacement is still going strong after two years. That's the benchmark we use when we talk about gear costs.
🏥
Insurance
The policy we wish we'd had sooner
We enrolled Huck in month four. Month three had been expensive. The enrollment timing advice on this site comes from that exact mistake — don't repeat it.
🍖
Food
What's actually in Huck's bowl
We've tried four different foods with Huck over three years. The food cost ranges you see here reflect real monthly spending, not the cheapest option on the shelf.
